This novel takes place in mid-northern Ontario in a fictional location.  Although all the characters are fictional and not intended to resemble anyone living or dead, the setting of the novel is much like the Temagami area. 

The timeline of the protest which is at the centre of Susan and Dave's problems follows the timeline of the Owain Lake protests in the 1990's.  This timeline was used to guarantee a bit of authenticity to police presence and the interest of reporters and other media.

There is no Red Fox Road, per say, and the images are not taken from the Red Squirrel Logging Road, but instead are a compilation of the many gravel roads that are to be found throughout the area from Bracebridge to New Liskeard, from Temagami to Sault Ste. Marie.
